Michael Carman was appointed president of the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), GM’s automotive engineering and design joint venture with SAIC, effective February 1, 2022.
He previously served as executive director, Global Energy Strategy, Cert. & Compliance, and Test Labs, from January 2020.
Carman began his career with General Motors in 1991. Early in his career he held several positions in the powertrain calibration area. In 2000, he joined PATAC as manager of Powertrain Calibration. Three years later, Carman was appointed EMS Design Systems engineer in Pontiac, Michigan.
He became manager of Development Systems in 2004. In 2006, he took over as president and CEO of the GMIDEL diesel engine joint venture between GM and Isuzu. He was the technical assistant to then-GM Vice Chairman Tom Stephens from 2008.
Carman became the executive director of Powertrain (now Propulsion Systems) for PATAC in November 2009. In 2016, he took on the additional role of GM China vice president, Global Propulsion Systems.
Carman received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Kettering University.
