Buick Debuts All-new Electra E5 as First Pre-production Model Rolls Off Assembly Line

Wuhan – Buick today marked another milestone in its electric vehicle offensive in China with the start of pre-production of the Electra E5 at the SAIC-GM Wuhan Ultium plant.

The large five-seat electric SUV is the first of an all-new generation of Buick EVs in China developed on the Ultium platform to reinforce the brand’s presence in the mainstream EV segment. It will officially be launched in the first quarter of next year and deliveries will begin in the first half.

The Electra E5 features Buick’s all-new EV design language along with segment-leading spaciousness and premium appointments. It will also stand out from the competition through leading technologies, including the latest generation of the Virtual Cockpit System and the enhanced Super Cruise driver assist system for intuitive control and intelligent driving.  

Leveraging GM’s over 25 years of expertise in EV development and advanced technology, the Electra E5 will take advantage of the full potential of the Ultium platform to provide an appealing EV experience with advanced safety, intelligence and performance.  

It will adopt local battery solutions tailored for China that support high thermal stability, low degradation and long battery life. With its advanced battery management system and leading battery protection technologies, the Electra E5 is designed to deliver higher levels of safety and reliability for EV mobility.

With the kickoff of Electra E5 pre-production, SAIC-GM celebrated the inauguration of its Wuhan Ultium plant. The state-of-the-art facility has been upgraded to include vehicle and battery pack assembly to support future EV rollout.

The highly flexible and automated plant incorporates global leading technology and craftsmanship to ensure high quality and manufacturing excellence of battery packs and drive units for the Electra E5.
