SHANGHAI – Vincent Wong has been appointed executive vice president of SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW), effective April 1.

Based at the joint venture’s headquarters in Liuzhou, Guangxi, he is responsible for SGMW’s overall business strategy and operations to ensure its continued success. The 14-year GM veteran reports to Julian Blissett, GM executive vice president and president of GM China.

Wong has held a broad range of finance leadership positions in Australia, the U.S., South Korea and China (Shanghai and Liuzhou) since joining GM in 2010.

Wong began his assignment at GM China in 2016 as director of Financial Planning and Analysis. He took on the roles of vice president and CFO of SGMW in 2018. Besides supporting the joint venture’s highly successful vehicle electrification strategy, he also championed its sustained export growth.

He most recently served as vice president of GM China Corporate Development and Global Mergers and Acquisitions since February 2023. Wong played a key role in identifying strategic partnerships, developing corporate strategy and helping the company explore new business opportunities in the domestic market.

“Vincent has a deep understanding of SGMW and General Motors,” said Blissett. “His extensive global experience and strategic acumen, combined with a strong ability to work cross-culturally, will enable him to continue his pivotal role in steering SGMW toward success in the fast-changing industry environment.”

In 2022, Wong was awarded honorary citizenship of Liuzhou for his outstanding contributions to the city’s economic development. This award is among the highest honors given to expatriates by the Liuzhou Municipal Government. He was the youngest and first ever from SGMW who received the honor.

Wong succeeds Ritch Schaafsma, who is transitioning to executive director of Corporate Development at GM in the U.S.

Established in 2002, SGMW is a three-way joint venture between GM China, SAIC and Guangxi Automobile Group that offers a broad lineup of mini-commercial and passenger vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brands.
